A landscape of doom

I composed “A Landscape of Doom” in April and May 2022, being inspired from the view outside my window. This landscape has always deeply on an emotional level affected and moved me and provided personal and artistic inspiration. It combines both darkness with an inexplicable sense of mystery and a vastness in its purest form.

To accurately notate the musical ideas I had in my mind, I used graphic notation. This notation would closely trace down the landscape’s contours. The instrumentation I chose for this piece, compromises four amplified cellos, an electric guitar, a prepared piano, and a percussion set. The instrumentation reflects the emotions evoked by this view.

For the cellos, I used a simple but effective technique. I alterated a single note by placing accidentals between the lines. This technique was mirrored for the other cellos. I also adapted a segment of the original line for the remaining instruments, which played in a non-pitched manner.

To enhance the piece, I created custom dynamic symbols which would suit the unique character and origin of the piece. Since the audience wouldn’t see the score, I incorporated a visual element by having a painter on stage,  which is improvising with temporary calligraphy and therefore draws images to his internal response to the piece
