A play in d
“A Play in D” is a game music composition which is influenced by game piece music and minimalism. It comprises 55 cards with musical motives, instructions, and graphic elements. The composition is built around a rhythmic loop. This loop is inspired by flamenco’s rumba, which gives the composition room for a development improvisation and pattern development. The piece includes also moments of silenceĀ and noise, which makes each performance unique.
To maintain clarity, I reduced the number of motifs, introducing smaller, fragmented ones. The non-pitched section encourages performers to create sound freely. The prompter’s role is similar to John Zorn’s “Cobra,” directing dynamics and balance.
In summary, “A Play in D” is a dynamic composition that draws from game piece music and minimalism, offering a unique and evolving musical experience not only to the audience but also to the performers.
