





A drummer's philosophizing about drumming
I composed this piece during Switzerland’s first lockdown in 2020. This composition reflects my shift from composing a violin sonata to exploring percussion after I was inspired by Iannis Xenakis’ “Rebonds B.” In my artistic-based research, I decided to use a big bass drum for its solid foundation and congas and tom-toms for their rich tonal range, since they would provide higher notes to the piece and therefore create add a complimentary element to the piece.
I created various motives and decided those which were most significant for me and for the composition. In an early stage of the compositional process, I realized that the piece needed multiple and different parts. The first part relies on repetition, while the second incorporated more complex rhythms. For the final part, I broke away from the established time signature and embraced the inspiration of a 7/8 rhythm. This lead the composition into a new direction.
The title, encapsulates the core concept of exploring the melodic and rhythmic aspects of drumming in a homophonic and homorhythmic manner, providing a musical and compositional perspective on the aspects of drumming respectively on being a drumer
